I continued on my basement organization today. It is my goal to reduce the amount of stuff and the amount of storage containers required to store…stuff. One of the things I decided to do away with is this plastic drawer unit that I currently use to store keepsakes for scrapbooking. These things include non-photo items, like newspaper clippings, invitations and greeting cards (yes, I keep and scrapbook those ;)), tickets and things from vacations or fun outings, certificates, and other momentos from special ocassions. The top drawer holds Faith’s “current” things, the middle one her keepsakes from past years, and the bottom one is for me and Brad.
While it’s fairly easy to just toss stuff in the drawer, I’m not great about keeping up with sorting it, and by the time I ever get back to scrapbooking (because it’s been a WHILE), my fear is that I won’t know what’s from what or when. I had empty 12×12 boxes from when I’d made busy boxes for daycare (since I’m downsizing I don’t need them all anymore). I decided to repurpose them for the scrapbooking keepsakes, that way I could divide and label by year. I used one stack for Faith’s things, and one stack for Brad and my things. I had each year separated in manila envelopes (labeled on the front, of course), and maintained that here because I only had so many boxes and needed to put two years to a box (I’m THAT behind!). Then I hid them away in this white cabinet. I completely removed the need for the plastic drawers, and removed some visual clutter from the space…bonus!
I spent about a half hour going through Faith’s things, and hope to spend another half hour getting my and Brad’s boxes done. I’m loving this challenge because there are so many other things I might be working on, and this is motivating me to stay on top of the organizing and still get those other things accomplished! Think of the great habits we’ll have developed after a month! This has also motivated me to get scrapbooks caught up, but that will have to wait for November! 😉
