This time of year in Nebraska brings that fall “tease” where we get a few days of cool temps…the kind of days that allow you to open your windows, make you want to throw on a flannel top and leggings, and head to Starbucks for a pumpkin mocha (or is that just me?). But then the heat comes back, as it did when we returned from our Labor Day weekend up at the cabin. I begrudgingly closed the house up, am ignoring that cute plaid flannel that’s so crying out to be worn, and ordered that pumpkin mocha iced instead of hot. Boo.
But that didn’t stop me from decorating for fall this week, and the right blend in the diffuser helps, too. As long as I don’t step outside, I can pretend it’s fall in the house!
My favorite fall and winter smells usually involve cinnamon, and that hasn’t changed since I’ve been diffusing essential oils instead of burning candles or using a wax burner. I love that I can still fill the house with the smells of autumn and not only avoid the toxins that come from the former methods, but I actually get aromatherapy benefits by diffusing the oils! I love blending Cinnamon Bark, Orange, Clove and Nutmeg essential oils (about 4 drops each) from Young Living in my Dew Drop diffuser. Below is a list of the benefits you can get from each of these four oils as well as some info on how to get them for yourself.
Please keep in mind that I’m only referring to Young Living essential oils. Young Living takes great steps (called the Seed to Seal process) to ensure the purity and therapeutic value of their oils. Not all oils are created equal. These are just general descriptions indicating which systems the oils support and what therapeutic actions each provides. The FDA doesn’t allow us to specifically indicate what conditions or diagnoses essential oils can help with, but feel free to do your own research. There are essential oil guides, both in print and via apps, and there is a ton of information online. All of the oils listed here can be used aromatically (diffusing or inhaling from the bottle or by putting a few drops in your palms), topically, and internally (either in a capsule or by adding to water, tea, even by using in cooking). Again, Young Living ONLY.
Cinnamon Bark – supports endocrine, circulatory, immune, respiratory and digestive systems. Protects, cleanses, stimulates, energizes. (When applying topically be sure to dilute cinnamon as it is considered a “hot oil” and can irritate the skin.)
Clove – supports nerve endings, respiratory, immune, muscular, circulatory, digestive and oral systems. Relieves, cleanses, protects, soothes and stimulates.
Nutmeg – supports circulatory, immune, nervous, digestive, adrenal, and muscular systems and joints as well as menstrual support and energy. Cleanses, energizes, stimulates, soothes muscles and balances.
Orange – supports respiratory, circulatory, digestive, cardiac, musculoskeletal and hormonal systems as well as supporting sleep, appetite, tissue and skin. Uplifts, calms, cleanses, repairs and smooths.
Other ways to use these oils…
- Add orange essential oil (or any citrus oil) to your water for a different twist and instead of unhealthy, sugary beverage options
- Create an immune boosting fall “tea” by adding any or all of these oils to hot water with a little bit of raw honey and/or apple cider vinegar.
- Put one or a blend of any of these oils into a mason jar with baking soda. Poke holes in the lid to create a shaker top, and sprinkle on carpets. Leave for about 10 minutes and then vacuum for a fresh fall smell throughout your home.
- Add oils to DIY cleaners
- Put 5-10 drops in epsom salts for a relaxing, autumn-infused therapeutic bath
- Put drops of orange and clove into a roller bottle or empty Young Living oil bottle and top off with a carrier oil. Put a roller ball top on and use as perfume.
- Use the oils in place of spices and extracts when cooking…a little goes a long way so start with a drop and work up!
