Christmas break, no surprise, is flying by! I’m trying to slow it down, utilize every moment productively but still enjoy the “break”. Not an easy balance. Anyone else in the same boat? I haven’t been getting up as early, which has probably been to my detriment since I could be utilizing those early morning hours. Yet somehow I am still tired and my coffee doesn’t seem to quite do the job. (I’m sure some nutrition and water would go a long way!) But I have been tackling some organizing projects and plan to squeeze in as much more as I can before Sunday, when I plan to relax with my family and make gingerbread houses (yes, after Christmas but it’s when we have time). Monday I’m taking Faith to meet friends for some trampoline fun. And tomorrow I’ll be snuggling my nephew all day! So that leaves today, part of Saturday, and Tuesday to finish projects. There is just never enough time for everything. Here’s what I’ve been working on so far (more detailed pics and posts to come)…
Clearing off my desk and reorganizing the office/craft space
Faith got an art easel for Christmas so while making space for that in our office/craft room, I moved a few things around, cleared my desk, and have been working to make it work more functionally for me. I’m moving things around on my command station pegboard, added a bulletin board, ditched things that weren’t working, and found spots for some decorative Christmas gifts!
Organizing bathroom drawers
While placing an order for my brother for Christmas from The Container Store (talk about a fun gift to plan!), I added some clear acrylic organizers for our bathroom drawers to replace what was no longer working well. First I was using DIY recycled box organizers, and after that some other drawer dividers that I had sitting around, but neither were ideal so it was time to find a better solution. I went to no dividers at all for a short time but now the new acrylic ones are in place and it’s working well!
Redecorating our bedroom
We repainted our bedroom earlier in the year with the intention of changing the bedding as well, but painting was as far as we got. My husband kept mentioning bringing red back in (that was the color of our first bedroom together), so for an anniversary/Christmas gift, I purchased some red accessories for the wall. I used gift certificates from Christmas to finally get a new duvet set and sheets and more accessories, and I’ve been working on DIY wall art as well. I need to paint a couple things for my dresser (changing turquoise to red), the closet doors need painted to match the walls, and eventually the curtains could be changed out. In the meantime, though, I am loving what we’ve done so far! (Just a little teaser above.) I get giddy every time I walk in there, and it’s finally feeling more like a retreat and a place I want to hang out rather than the room that gets left for last when it comes to decorating and organizing.
I’ve also been utilizing a few apps for getting organized with my daily routine, the blog, our budget, and meal planning. Today and over the remaining time I hope to tackle the kitchen, the rest of the bathroom, Faith’s room and the basement (or at least as much of it as I can). I had hoped to be working on projects AND sharing them this week but there are only so many hours in the day, and actually this works well so that I can post organizing projects as inspiration for you in January! As much as I’d like to share one organizing project/tip every day in January, that’s not very feasible while working full time outside of the home. But I would like to get back to at least posting more regularly, so that’s one of MY resolutions for the new year.
My goals for 2017:
- Blog at least three times and spend two hours on blog training per week
- Work with Brad to stick to a budget and slash our debt
- Eliminate processed food, exercise at least four times a week, and lose the weight I’ve gained since starting my job at school (I think I’ve gained 10 pounds but would like to lose closer to 15)
- Utilize apps (Trello, Every Dollar, Emeals) and a consistent daily routine, including getting up at 5:00 am every day, to achieve the above goals (more on those apps and how I’m using them in upcoming posts)
I’m leaving it at basically three main goals because each is pretty big in-and-of-itself, and when you try to tackle too much, it’s easy to fail at everything. I’m going to have to continually remind myself that if I have a slip-up, that it won’t be as big of a deal as long as I get right back to it, rather than throw my hands in the air and give up completely. I also intend to post reminders where I will see them as to why these goals are so important, so that I don’t lose sight of the end and why the work will be so worth the effort.
As far as the blog goes, I continue to feel so blessed. Despite a year where I wasn’t able to post nearly as much as I’d have liked, my subscriber list grew five times what it was earlier this year, and I continue to get messages from people that read and enjoy the blog. I had the opportunity to partner with Staples on a blog post, and was invited to a blogger only preview of The Container Store! My Blissful Space was also featured on multiple websites. I consider that success! I’m so thankful for all of you that visit my blog. Blessings to you for a fabulous 2017!
