We are home today so I’m taking advantage of this 3rd weekend day to continue kitchen organization and getting those projects shared with you! I was already off due to Martin Luther King Jr Day, but then we got covered in ice so even the hubby’s home today! I have a lot planned so I’d be ok if we got one more day tomorrow, which sounds pretty likely since there’s more ice and snow yet to come. While I’m glad for the day off, I’m disappointed that we haven’t had a really good SNOW yet! Where’s the sparkly white pretty stuff? Right now my view out the window is of dead grass with only scant patches of old snow and what appears to be wet roads, but it’s all covered in a sheet of ice.
Saturday my in-laws visited so I didn’t organize that day. Instead we spent the morning mad-cleaning as we always do when company comes (someday we’ll get better about automating our weekly cleaning…I’m working on it), and when they left I spent a good chunk of time moving photos to my new external hard drive. (Have you SEEN how small those are now?!) The photos on my laptop were getting a bit out-of-control and since I wasn’t in any mood to start an organizing project that evening, I thought it was time well spent. One way or another I was going to be productive!
Yesterday we had church and stopped at the store for a THIRD time to make sure we had what we needed to ride out this storm. One of the things I failed to get done last week was meal-planning and shopping for this week. We made soups for lunch when my in-laws were down, so we had leftovers of that and plenty of food in the house, but we needed some produce since Brad and I are trying to be healthier. I hope to work through the food that’s in the house and then go to a more Paleo/clean diet as soon as possible. (You’ll see in the fridge pics that it’s not full of the healthiest of options! When I shop, it’s organic. When Brad shops, it’s whatever’s cheapest. ;))
My priority yesterday was to get the fridge organized so that I could wrap up the kitchen posts that were supposed to be done last week, so that I can then move onto my original organizing plans for this week (bathroom, closets, bedrooms). Since I was current on Young & The Restless episodes (my favorite way to make cleaning and organizing more enjoyable), I put on a Young Living podcast and got to work on the fridge! Before I get into the organizing part, though, I want to say that doing some sort of education or training while tackling another project on my to-do list was so great! I’ve done it before but think I forgot how amazing it can be. Not only did I learn some things while cleaning out my fridge (which was a great way to manage my time), but the podcast really motivated me business-wise and made me want to learn more. I’m going to do at least one webinar today and possibly a training call this evening, in addition to more organizing and blogging! I choose podcasts wisely when doing that, though. If it’s something that I feel I’ll need to take a lot of notes on or be fully checked into, then I try to listen to those recordings in a quiet place with a notebook on my lap. Either that or I’ll need to listen a second time…which wouldn’t be all bad, either, I guess.
Ok, onto the fridge! (Be sure to scroll to the end because it took a few attempts.)
Here was the state of our fridge when I began…
I really like those fridge bins and normally they do a great job. But sometimes we get more groceries than we seem to have room for, or people just don’t put things back nicely (ahem, husband and child!), and the end result is what you see above. Total. Chaos.
I took everything out and wiped down the shelves with my go-to-for-everything cleaner, Thieves!
My DIY label is getting a bit trashed but that bottle IS used for cleaning, so… 😉 I know that with Thieves Household Cleaner, not only will the fridge look and smell clean, but I’m also able to naturally kill any germs and nasties that have taken up residence in there! (Thieves cleaner is a Young Living product and I’m a distributor, so if you’re interested in learning more about it I can help you out…just contact me through my button under “About Me”.)
Once I got everything wiped down and the bins washed out, I started putting it back. Last week I shared an infographic on how to organize your fridge to keep food fresh longer, and I did my best to adhere to those tips when reorganizing our fridge. I even got the produce drawers out of storage in the basement! Based on the infograhic, some produce moved to the counter, and the apples moved from the fruit bowl into the fridge.
I tried moving the milk lower as well as bringing the meat drawer back, but it didn’t work out. I did get the leftovers on the top shelf (great plan because when they’re on bottom we tend to forget things and they go bad). I put Faith’s snacks and her probiotic in the left bin on the 2nd shelf. The healthy things that I need to use more of were in a bin next to hers. The bin on the right held the odds and ends that didn’t have anywhere else to go.
But as I tried to use the meat drawer I remembered that it was broken (won’t stay on the track). It also takes up half the width of that shelf, and I like being able to divide and organize things more than that. And since I was frustrated that the milk wasn’t in the optimal spot for freshness, I rearranged.
Don’t get too excited. I’m not done yet. 😉 As I was posting pics I discovered that they didn’t look quite neat enough, and upon attempting to retake photos, I realized that the bins kept catching on the bottom shelf making them nearly impossible to slide out. So I rearranged AGAIN.
I kept the leftovers on top but moved the shelf up to the top position.
The bins got moved to the middle shelf where they no longer catch. I also adjusted placement of this shelf so that there wasn’t wasted vertical space.
And finally, dairy got moved to the bottom, and this shelf now has a lot of room for taller items which also makes it easier to see the contents on the bottom of the fridge!
The door is the one area that doesn’t require a lot of shuffling. Once I wiped down the bins and put things in a slightly different configuration, the door was done and stayed as-is, despite the rest of the fridge being rearranged three times! I only wish we had one more door bin!
I think I’m finally happy with the arrangement. I may need to adjust the shelf placement later depending on what we need to store, but I think I’m going to like it this way! (Fingers crossed.)
Whew! Well that post took me about three hours and my webinar is about to begin so I need to get a move-on. I hope to work on cabinets and drawers in the kitchen and get that posted later today!
