Whew! That’s a big title! 😉
Last week I talked about how my DIY habit (or rather the inability to finish all my DIY’s) has bred clutter and how I was planning to clear the basement of stuff…extra daycare things, items for sale/donation, anything not needed, etc…once-and-for-all. Since my income has dropped daycare-wise since school started, some extra money was also in order. I decided to throw a last-minute garage sale and was able to swap Jazzercise classes to free up my Saturday. Fortunately everything was gathered together in the basement already, so I was able to price and prep everything Thursday and Friday and have the sale Saturday morning.
|These baskets have given me years and years of use, but it was time to part ways!|
I was doing this one alone (though The Bestie came over unexpectedly and helped, which was awesome!), so I decided to make the start time 8:30 instead of 8:00. We had a football game Friday night and I was worried about being rushed. As it turned out, I got a good night’s sleep and had everything set up and priced (and signs out) by 8:00 am, so I started early! I didn’t do an ad this time so I wasn’t sure how the traffic would be, but I set the signs out early on Friday and (since people don’t read) there were several drive-by’s a day ahead. In addition, I posted the sale on my Facebook page as well as about five garage sale pages in the area.
|Finally got rid of the microwave…we’ve been a microwave free home for a few months now!|
The weather was perfect…I was comfortable all morning in yoga pants, a tee and a hoodie. Traffic was never busy but was pretty steady throughout the morning. I had already registered to consign at our kids’ consignment sale coming up next week, so if the kids’ stuff didn’t sell, that was ok. We also had a good sized “free” table, which allowed us to get rid of things like old computer speakers, an inconsistently working surround-sound system, some outdoor toys, and little things that weren’t worth pricing. I wound up making about $155 that day, then sold another $60 worth of Faith’s clothes to friends after the sale. It wasn’t the $300-500 sale I had in the spring, but clutter was cleared and extra money was made! And I still have a couple bins to go to the kids’ consignment sale.
There was very little left that couldn’t go to the kids’ sale. I did have several Christmas things, and had planned to donate them to church for the Christmas bazaar (they have a used Christmas goods sale). However, I wanted nothing to go back to the basement and I really didn’t want to keep all that stuff until December, so off to Goodwill it all went, along with cookbooks I never use now have time to copy recipes from, a couple lamps that weren’t being used, and some other home items. As I boxed the remaining kids’ items, I priced them with the Wee Peats (consignment sale) tags so I wasn’t packing and unpacking and packing again. Plus it was one thing off my checklist for this busy week…my sister’s getting married Saturday so I don’t have a lot of time between now and when I have to drop the sale stuff off Sunday afternoon!
I was holding off pricing the clothes since they were hanging and easier to get to, but then a friend bought all but a handful of costumes! There’s only one box of things that won’t be gone after the kids’ sale, and it’s a box of daycare curriculum supplies. I am considering bundling it to sell but haven’t figured that out yet.
In the meantime, I read this post about making extra money and was reminded that Amazon buys back books. I sold a couple books back and will be getting over $9 on an Amazon gift card. Not a lot, but for books that weren’t getting read, it was something…and they paid for the shipping! I ALWAYS need something on Amazon. 😉
Now that the clutter is getting cleared and my youngest daycare girl is in preschool a few mornings a week, I’ve working on a plan of attack for getting back into a good daily and weekly routine and for getting the house REALLY organized. More on that in the next couple of days!
For now, though, you can do me a favor! I’m planning a giveaway on the blog (it’s been a while!) and Facebook once my Facebook page reaches 500 likes…I’m 85 away! I’d appreciate you hopping on over there (click here)…and Instagram while you’re at it…and giving me a like or a follow! Thanks in advance!!
