I want to start off saying that I do not sell Norwex nor am I being compensated for this post. If I find something I
like love, I want to share it with you. To me that’s the whole point of design/organization/diy/craft blogging…to share ideas and better ways to do things. With that said, I am having a Norwex party in a couple weeks, so if you read this and are dying to try their products, be sure to check out the link at the bottom, and if you purchase, please enter my name as the hostess (Crystal Sixta). Thanks in advance!
I first heard about Norwex at a craft fair booth and remembered being impressed, but years later couldn’t remember exactly what their products were all about. I did recall that it revolved around a cloth, but that was the extent of it.
Recently a friend had a party and when she posted on the event page that I could clean with water (no harmful chemicals!!), help those in my family with allergies and/or asthma, and my kitchen washcloth wouldn’t need washed except every 1 1/2- 2 weeks, I was definitely on board to try it out! Less laundry, less washcloths and towels in the kitchen…oh the possibilities!
Of course it’s difficult to understand how that could possibly work. I mean, we live in an antibacterial world (which in my opinion and experience is more of a problem than a solution)! Everything we see is “antibacterial”, “antimicrobial”, etc. etc. etc. The problem with that is that the bacteria become resistant to what we throw at it, and companies are continually having to make “new and improved” versions to do what the last formula did. Here’s an excerpt from a PDF on the Norwex site:
The harm chemicals have on humans is extensive. Most concerning
are the growing links to chemicals that surround us in everyday life.
They are linked to serious diseases such as birth defects, cancer and
psychological abnormalities. Many today believe that the extensive
use of chemicals indoors contributes to the ‘modern’ diseases such
as allergies and asthma.

So how does it work? Well, I’m not a Norwex consultant and have only been to two parties, so here is my explanation as best as I can recall and relay. Norwex “Antibac” cloths contain colloidal (I believe) silver which kills bacteria to a 99.9% effectiveness. Here are some sites that explain how silver has been used for medical purposes and a couple videos demonstrating its effectiveness:
This is a You Tube video of someone who tested Norwex using swabs and petri dishes to show its effectiveness. There are many out there, this is just the first one I found!
There is so much more that I could say about what I have learned from Norwex parties, but besides the fact that it is a great way to drastically reduce chemicals, and the cost and time involved with traditional cleaning, I find that I have less to store, which means less space wasted for cleaning products and more space for other things!
Also, because the cloth kills bacteria from within, you don’t need to wash the cloths nearly as often as you would normally! You know that smell your dishcloth has after a day
or two of sitting over the sink? That’s because it has built up bacteria (a LOT of bacteria). With the Norwex Envirocloth or Kitchen Cloth, you can go 1-2 weeks before washing! (That sold me!)
Here are the products I currently have:
This is what I would consider Norwex’s bread and butter. I think this is the cloth that started it all, and it is a great multipurpose microfiber cleaning cloth. (Not like the microfiber you buy in the stores for a couple reasons…this is a much higher quality.. mainly because of the silver that is in the cloth.) The cloth comes in four colors so you can color code for different areas of your house (ex. yellow-kitchen, blue-bathroom, red-garage, green-outside windows & toys, maybe).
To clean Norwex cloths, you can boil for 20 minutes or wash in the washing machine, but just be sure to never use bleach or bleach products (no Oxi for those who make their own detergents!) and no fabric softener (in any form – liquid, crystals, dryer sheets or bar). Doing this will void the 2-year warranty on the cloths.) You can also wash in vinegar. Hang or machine dry.
Kitchen Cloth & Towel
Initially these is what I was most excited about because with daycare and my own family I prepare three meals, two snacks, and clean a LOT of dishes and often wipe the counter and table. With properties like the Envirocloth, the kitchen cloth and towel also kill bacteria and as a result you can use the same cloths for a week or two before washing! One thing I learned and am still trying to remember is to scrub the cloth with dish soap or a foamy hand soap in the evening before hanging it up one final time to dry. This gets all the extra germies on the surface of the cloth and extends the time between washings. (When it starts to stink, it’s time to wash!) I am looking forward to having 3 or 4 each so that when I’m washing one set I have a back-up! And I’m even more excited that I’ll ONLY need 3 or 4 sets instead of the dozens I have now!
