This is a quick post today! I had this on the calendar for a different day, and as usual am behind, but it worked out perfectly to share this on Earth Day! In addition to ditching our microwave and using essential oils, the “hippy-ness” continues in that we also use cloth napkins! I made the switch because with the daycare kids we were going through so many paper napkins. Often they’d take one (because someone else did), and not even really use it. I was never confident enough to put it back, so in the trash it went. I decided to save a little moolah and reduce the trash by switching to cloth.
I keep them in a basket in my kitchen hutch, and while we do fold them, they’re not perfect, and that’s ok because hands are constantly in there grabbing one. I’ve picked them up at garage and estate sales mostly, choosing ones I like but not worrying too much about color scheme for daily use. The teal ones (from Pier 1) are my “nicer” ones, because some of the white ones are stained (thank you Nutella) and weren’t great for pulling out when we have company. I also have new white cloth ones that I purchased well over a year ago to dye…maybe I’ll get that done this summer!
We try to lay our napkin over our chair so that we know whose is whose and use it throughout that day, then it goes in the wash that evening. My daughter is quite messy, though, and often she makes them a one-time-use kind-of-deal. We do still have some paper ones for parties and camping, but this has worked out great for us and we’ll keep on doing it!
Happy Earth Day!
