The kitchen is at a stand-still at the moment, mostly because of a lack of time on our part to continue with the touch-up and cleaning process, but we’ll get there. Hoping to have my girlfriends over in a couple weeks so hopefully by then it will be mostly done! It may be a Father’s Day weekend project, but we’ll be sure to break for a cookout at the lakes at least. 😉
In the meantime, we’ve decided that a couple other “issues” need our attention. The first is the very large maple tree in our backyard. I love the fact that we live in an established neighborhood with large trees, and the thought of taking down that shade worries me quite a bit. However, it is a shallow-rooting tree and my father-in-law cautioned us years ago that it may easily fall in a bad storm…and we have quite a few of those windy storms here. Every time we do, I have trouble sleeping wondering if this is the day it will come down, and should I move Faith to another sleeping area…and where’s the safest place. Besides that, the birds wind up pooping everywhere…all the chairs, the picnic table, the swingset. It’s not completely avoidable and I also love the birds, but I have been pooped on or near more than I like to count and it’s difficult to enjoy the outdoors with that worry literally hanging over my head. There’s a certain time of the year that they poop tons of black bird poop…even worse than the rest of the spring/summer. Nasty. The tree also has a bunch of helicopters which not only make everything look messy, but they keep clogging up our gutters despite having gutter guards. Brad’s spent some time in the last two downpours digging helicopters out of the gutters because rain was pouring down the front of the house. Not good.
The other, probably larger, issue is that our home has settling issues, as most homes eventually do. Ours was built in the early 50’s. A crack that spans across two basement walls has gotten larger and wider and is starting to bow the drywall of the one finished space in our basement. A realtor friend had advised us to not put more money into the house than necessary (just paint the kitchen cabinets and take care of a few smaller things), but it’s gotten to the point that we feel we can no longer ignore it for another year, and it would be at least that long before we’d list the house…assuming we decide to sell. (I’d like to move but also like a lot about our home, and it’s sufficient for the three of us.)
We have companies coming out for estimates for both the tree and the basement, and will be hopefully starting those projects soon. I’m more than a little concerned about how having the yard tore up (especially when the tree and roots are removed) will impact daycare and the kids playing outside, but I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Maybe my husband’s sodding experience will come in handy. 😉 I’d love a pergola over the deck, but I’m getting a little ahead of myself. (And my husband will be seeing dollar signs for a while as it is.)
But just for the sake of dreaming…I pulled some backyard inspiration to share for today!
Oh a place to hang lights…yes, please!!!
